From BV: CPSC Stops Nearly 3M Units of Non-Compliant Imported Products in 3rd Quarter of Fiscal Year

In the third quarter of 2012, Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Investigators stopped nearly 3 million units of imported consumer products that violated United States safety rules at U.S. ports. This number of units exceeded the combined totals from the first two quarters of 2012, and represents the CPSC’s additional efforts to improve the agency’s ability to enforce product safety compliance. Through a combined enforcement effort, CPSC and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection teams have stopped products from entering the retail stream and ending up on store shelves for consumer purchase.

Toys and Children’s Products continued to make up the bulk of products stopped:

l A total of 5,752 imports were screened by officials. Of that 5,752 a total of 420 products were stopped, a total of over 2.8 million units

l Of the 420 products stopped, 341 were in the Toys and Children’s Products category. This made up 81% of the products (1 million + units) violating U.S. safety rules

Two methods allowing the use of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) as a means to test children’s products for lead were formally approved by CPSC on February 21th.

From SGS: EU Provides Illustrative Examples of Packaging Under Packaging Directive

The EU recently amended the ‘Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive’ by providing illustrative examples of packaging, part of packaging and

non-packaging materials and articles. The chemical requirements for the 4 heavy metals remain unchanged. The new law takes effect on 30 September 2013.
